Facts about Pit Bulls

I decided today that I would take a moment and do a post on a few Pit Bull facts. First off did you know that in Miami, FL it is legal to own a tiger but not a pit bull? DR and I thought about moving to Miami awhile back because I have a friend who lives there and he is a HUGE Miami Heat fan but after reading about their Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) we decided against it.

Seems a little ridiculous doesn't it?

Pit bulls attacks have resulted in more fatalities than any other breed. This is true. It is also true that the probability of being fatally attacked by a pit bull is lower than any other breed. Actually, the probability of being fatally attacked by a pit bull is .00125%. That doesn't seem very high now does it?

In canine temperament studies, pit bulls consistently score higher than a lot of other breeds. The average score was an 82.8%. American Pit Bull Terriers score an 86.8%, Beagle's and Great Dane's average was 80%, Pomeranian's average score was a 75.8%.

Male dogs are 6.2 times more likely to attack than a female dog. In 2006, more than 97% of attacks were from dogs that were not neutered or spayed. So be responsible, spay or neuter your pit bull. The facts show that this helps their chances with not attacking someone and will help to end this stigma that pit bulls are aggressive.

Pit Bulls used to be known as the nanny dog. When you had children, you wanted a pit bull to protect them. It was this way for over a hundred years. Pit bulls love to be around humans and are extremely good with children.

Pit Bulls form extremely strong bonds with their owners and want nothing more than to please them.  Pit Bull puppies actually prefer human company to their mothers on average 2 weeks earlier than any other breed. They can also be pushy and stubborn too though. If you don't set rules they will make up their own and try to test the ones you have. Most pit bulls also love going new places and meeting new people. I know Frederick is always ready to jump in the car and meet anyone we come across.

  5. Don't go to a breeder. They cost a lot of money that way plus there are TONS of pit bulls looking for homes in shelters and rescues. Find a shelter or an organization that specifically deals with pit bulls. I like Love a Bull out of Austin, TX they are always posting dogs looking for homes on their site. Also, Villalobos from Pit Bulls and Parolees if you live anywhere near Louisiana.

  6. When i was a child i would always hear stories about pitbulls killing people and i began to hold a grudge against them. But as soon as i started to like dogs and other animals i learned its all the owners. I am i dogaholic even though i was never allowed to have them. Anyhow, though i understood pitbulls weren't bad dogs, and no dog is bad (its all us, the humans), i still didnt enjoy them as much as some other dogs. but recently, my love for pitbull awakened. they are now my favorite breed. it hurts me so so much to see people talking about pitbull being bad, how they should be banned and all should be murdered. its not only the people who train their pitbulls to be feirce, its also the people who dont want to accept pitbulls as dogs. So to all you pitbull haters, do you judge a persopn by their race? if a white peopson shoots someone does that mean all white people are muderers? no. and im not trying to humanize pitbulls. but if you are to start judgeing dogs on what another dog did, you should start understanding that before you can look to the fact that a pitbull is a dog, influence by its owner.

Anyways, i'm so happy to see other people spreading the word. pitbulls are really just the sweetest. We are adopting pitbull this summer! thank you so much love your article! Pitbulls rule!

  8. wow so sad i told people about that but they didn't believe me and another reason pitbulls are aggressive is because they'll have been beaten or hurt badly in their lives and some people just don't care i've had 2 (blue nose and red nose) pitbulls named duke & riddick and they all listen and were people lovers they were only aggressive to people walking with a hood on (a.k.a hoodie) and they didnt like it but they were my babies "Rest.In.Peace Riddick"
