this USED to be one of his beds |
DR was mowing the backyard and left him inside. We do this all the time and he hasn't torn anything up in a LONG time. I thought we were getting to the point where maybe we could leave him alone while we were at work or something. I hate leaving him in a crate. He is really good about it, he runs right in when he knows were getting ready for work or when we say crate.
He just runs in and waits for me to come shut it. I just feel really bad. Luckily we don't have to leave him alone for very long usually. I cant wait until he is calm enough to leave him out alone. Frederick is now laying on a sheet in the living room since he tore his bed apart.
It is definitely not as comfortable as his bed was and he looks so sad. I feel bad but haven't had a chance to get him a new one yet. Poor puppy...
Any advice on how to get him better at staying alone would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Sweet puppy!! Maybe try a blanket for him that you have used. That way he has your scent to calm him.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog this morning. You've given me several great ideas for my own dog Zeke. Frederick is really lucky to be a part of your life. You obviously consider him a family member so I hear your concern about crating him. Don't worry too much about the crate. Dogs are den animals by nature and actually prefer a small place to curl up in. As long as you don't use if for punishment, he'll be just fine in it.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the suggestion. He has one of my old blankets in his crate that he loves maybe I will try moving it out into the living room at least until I can get him a new bed. I know they are den animals and his crate is actually really roomy and I have a black out curtain over the back half so its REALLY like a den in there but I still cant help but feel guilty when I have to leave him in there.
ReplyDeleteTry leaving music playing. Have you heard of thunder shirts. They help with anxiety. We have a lab pointed mix with stranger anxiety and it seems to calm him soon. I have read they are good for seperation anxiety also. Hes scared and depends on you. The more you leave and come back the more he will begin to understand you always will. Good luck
ReplyDeleteTry putting peanut butter or yogurt in a Kong for him to snack on while your away. Freezing it makes it last longer too! My little monster loves her kong!
